For visits to countries never visited? A TOUR is the ONLY SANE CHOICE! When you return next time you'll know enough to do it RIGHT!")
Even trolley tours in cities like Savannah, GA; San Antonio, TX; St. Augustine, FL; and San Francisco, CA are useful to help one find points of interest.
Depends on the city.
I've not enjoyed the tour because I travel a lot and it makes no sense to lose money on the additional service agency. I was in London for the last time on vacation, stayed at hotel Berhamo. Airport transfers ordered them Book Airport Transfers in Advance at Affordable Prices , maybe someone come in handy.
I never, never, never use tours. I don't travel with my Mommy and I don't want someone pretending to be my Mommy holding my hand. I do a little research on the place I'm going then guide myself.
Having said that, my real Mommy always uses tours and swears by them.
I am a wing-it kind of person
I don't usually unless I'm in Europe and it's a country I never been to otherwise I'm on my own
I definitely prefer "no tours" over tours. As john said above, do a little research and then venture out on your own. In my opinion, if the place is safe enough for me to visit, then it's safe enough for me to venture out on my own. Besides, you will see a lot more than what the "travel company" wants you to see for financial reason for themselves...
Create your own itinerary and see what YOU want to see.
Really depends on the language - I'm not skilled with Asian languages.
I always want to do my own thing. Every tour I've been on, I see things on which I wish I could have spent more time, or things off the beaten path that simply weren't part of my tour. I guess it depends where you are going... I can understand it more overseas. For most stops, as @jjjett30169 suggests, I want to see what I want to see.
If you speak the local language, figure it out yourself -- that's half the fun. Plus you can do the things that interesting you and other members of your party, which may not be the same as the majority of American or Japanese tourists.
If you don't speak the local language, get the tour! Try to find a place does custom ones so you can hit your points of interest. Check TripAdvisor for reviews.
