Headed downtown for the last regular season Friday night Astros home game and fireworks show and decided to stay at Hotel ICON this time which is about a six block walk to Minute Maid Park as the rate was really low and we had not been back to the Hotel ICON in about two years. The hotel is located in the old Union National Bank Building that was built in 1912, in the north end of downtown Houston with very easy access in and out of the downtown area as well as a Metro LightRail stop.
I checked in using the Mobile App and promptly requested a Platinum Premier upgrade if possible. In about two minutes I was greeted by an associate who noted I had requested an upgraded room (hmm should be automatic). Well as I checked my reservation shorty there after, BANG....Junior Suite!!
Arriving at the hotel a 2:30 PM it is so nice that the valet parking point is not on a downtown (street like you find at many downtown hotel properties which seems do to nothing more than create traffic jams and messes around the hotels), but in a garage. The valet was so very quick and we were off to the front desk for a very efficient few moments with Rita a very friendly warm professional woman who promptly went to their rolodex file when I told her I'd used the App to check-in and pulled out our envelope complete with the breakfast certificate (no lounge), a free drink at the bar (Line &Lariat... a spot brightlybob is familiar with), and the room key. She also thanked us for our loyalty and told us we had been upgraded. Very well done to have it all in one spot and filled out so as not to have to stand and wait like at so many Marriott properties.
We went right up to our suite on the top floor using the room key in the elevator to access the floors above the third floor (love that feature). A nice room awaited us named The Waldorf Suite (cool as the NYC Waldorf was a favorite) that was very bright (once you got the drapes opened up), comfortable, cozy, spotless and fresh.
DING DING....the work desk even had room to use if you were on a business trip AND had ample plugs to charge stuff.
Huge jetted tub and very large shower in one of the cleanest bathrooms I've seen. Plenty of bath towels as well as toiletries were available.
After the game (Astros 11 - Angels 3) and the fireworks we headed off on the 12 minute walk back to the hotel to utilize the good size mini-fridge were we had stored some champagne and wine to celebrate the Astros clinching a playoff spot. There were plenty of actual glasses (unlike a few other full service Marriott spots we've found that use plastic cups....STOP).
Before checking out the next morning we went down to the Line & Lariat (restaurant and bar) for the breakfast buffet which was very well stocked, fresh and had a nice sampling of the usual breakfast buffet things plus some fresh squeezed juices. Again the associates working were happy, friendly and very helpful with anything you wanted. Something else I noticed on the breakfast certificate it noted that gratuity was included (something often found in other countries, but not common here in the states at least to us).
We text the valet (well my Wife did as she's advanced in technology beyond what I can do) and within five minutes we had our car and were on our way home after yet another very enjoyable time in downtown H-Town.
Great hotel, great location, friendly well managed spot that we will not hesitate to use over and over again rather than make the 40 mile drive home after games, concerts or events.
