The Westin Houston Downtown

Blog Post created by iahflyr on Sep 13, 2018

This is our second visit to this property as we prefer to stay downtown after concerts and sporting events rather than make the almost 40 mile drive back home.  Since the Westin is right across from Minute Maid Park (The Juice Box) a nice corner room makes it perfect to watch the after game Friday night fireworks show.  The Westin is also right across the parking lot from famous  Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse and on the other side of the hotel two excellent restaurants Osso-Kristalla – The new Italian trattoria – Houston and a slightly more upscale yet still very casual Potente – Upscale Italian in Downtown Houston

We planned on arriving at the hotel around 2:30 PM, but as things go we had a 30 minute delay which caused us to be at the hotel at 3:45 PM and had to get into the conga line for valet parking.  My very astute Wife thought it would be a great idea for me to grab the roll-a-board from the trunk and go get our key to the room (as I had used the mobile check-in) while she took over in the drivers seat to wait for the line to move and give the car to the valet folks.  Great idea except for the fact their was about 10 others in line to check-in.  The lobby is somewhat small as is the bar which separates the front desk from the small restaurant.  The bar was packed with others waiting for their rooms as well most dressed in their Astros gear as many must have the same idea we had.  After about 10 minutes I got to the front desk and of course the room is not ready.  Oh well, so I told the lady we'd wait in the bar and she promised she'd come get us....low and behold in about 15 minutes she did, (gave us our breakfast certificates as the Westin does not have an Executive Lounge) and we were in our room overlooking The Juice Box.

From the hotel site photo of our room.

The corner room has a nice foyer which is where the fairly large closet is located and opens up into the spacious room.  There is a safe and min-fridge which was put to the test with a couple of wine bottles from home!!   The Westin beds are fantastic as is the view out the huge windows.  Each stay the room is spotless, fresh and very well maintained.  Plenty of desk space and oversize chair as well as a couch which I believe is a sleeper sofa.  The bathroom has a very large walk-in shower with the shower head in the ceiling to produce a very nice rain shower look and a large bathtub as well.  We really do enjoy this type of room and had the exact same room on our first visit to this Westin.

Breakfast the next morning in the small restaurant was the cold buffet of fruit, breads/rolls and cereal since no lounge and for an fee of something like $10 you could get the full buffet which we opted for as we wanted egg white omelettes which were huge and very tasty.  Everyone was very friendly from the front desk staff, bar staff and restaurant folks.  Valet had our car ready for us in about 10 minutes and we were off headed back to The Woodlands.

Great location with many bars and restaurants within a 10 minute walk, plus the George R. Brown Convention Center and Toyota Center also 10-15 minute walk.  Very easy access to freeways so getting in and out of downtown H-Town is a breeze.  With so many Marriott properties in the area to chose from we will certainly look for the best rate on the room type we want, but the Westin will always be high on the list.
