Recently stayed at the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami. Great location, great amenities, and friendly staff. Great views from some rooms, others are getting blocked by all the high-rises being built in Miami right now. It's really a different city than it was ten years ago. Downtown and Brickell are concrete canyons now, which can be seen as a negative, but the new, exciting things that come along with this development and energy are quite positive.
Some staff are great, but some lacked basic knowledge of the areas, amenities and specifics of the hotel, and some had trouble understanding English. Had the breakfast on the second floor overlooking the street one day, and it was fantastic - service and food.
Had dinner at Boulud Sud in the hotel: great food and ambiance. Unfortunately, Downtown Miami and Brickell have adopted South Beach's automatic 18% gratuity, and the decline in service can be seen in this restaurant. It's a shame that a great chef has allowed this to happen in his Miami restaurant. Couldn't get arrested: couldn't get water refilled, no one checked on the food after it was served. But the food itself was outstanding, and the dining room & bar are both beautiful.
Had dinner at Bazaar Mar in Brickell, and Jose Andres did not disappoint. Even though he has also instituted the automatic gratuity rule, the service was great here, and the food was even better!
